Protection of privacy...We keep any patient-related image as anonymous as possible. We put a high priority on warranting the privacy of the patients we photographed. No one should leave personal data in the image or on the back of a photograph submitted to a publisher. The "others" have no interest to know who is shown there, therefore they should not. Any of our patients is asked to read a flyer explaining what medical photography is all about and what it can be used for, and then sign a consent form at every photo-session; for those who can't read Dutch we supply the flyer and form also in English and Turkish. The simple fact that someone poses in front of your camera does by no means mean that permission is given to publish that picture. Publishing does not only mean showing the image on a seminar, or using it in a scientific magazine to illustrate your article; it also means showing images you made of those you treated successfully to new patients. If the portrayed person is well recognizable the matter is even more problematic. Are you interested to know more about patient privacy and what you can do to protect it? The NVMAC (Dutch Society for Medical Audiovisual Communication, the Dutch association of medical photographers) published a book (in Dutch only) on the subject, price 25 Euro incl. p&p.
